What is EMDR therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is a structured therapy, that encourages the client to briefly focus on a traumatic memory that they have. Bilateral stimulation, causes the left and right sides of the brain to better communicate with each other. This communication is intended to change the way that the memory is stored in the brain, thus reducing and eliminating the problematic symptoms.

There are several ways to create bilateral simulation such as: eye movements (following the therapists fingers or the light on a light bar), hand held pulsars (buzzies), or hand taps by the therapist. Bilateral stimulation is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories.
